Chicken Egg Layers

what is the best meat breed and egg layer breed chicken to grow in my back yard? (less than ten)?

I have 11 bantam chicks (i did not realized they will be so small) for egg layer, and I want to get few meat chicken (4-5) for my back yard “free roaming and grain feed chicken”. What will be the best breed for that. My bantam chicks are very smart and they do come back every evening.

a dual propose breed might be the best choice because they are good layers, and also good for meat. this means that you could eat all the roosters before they start to crow and keep the hens for laying. australorps, orpington, sussex, brahma, jersey giant are all great layers and meat birds.
if you want a just meat breed then the fastest growing would be a cornishX but they also often grow so fast they get problems before they reach slaughter weight. those would not be good free roaming chickens because unlike most chickens they wouldn’t walk back at night. free rangers are another meat type that doesn’t grow as fast so that they are healthier and they come back at night and are good for free roaming. cochins and jersey giants are very slow growing but they do reach 8-10lbs for hens and 9-13lbs for cocks, but they are so sweet tempered you might have a hard time killing them :)
a good egg layer white egg layer is a leghorn. they lay tons of eggs but aren;t my favorite because they are terrified of humans. a more calm type is a red or black sex link and they lay a lot of brown eggs. almost every chicken will come back home each evening like you bantams do except cornishX
