Slow Cooker – if I change the quantity of meat do I need to change the cooking time?

Lots of recipes that I see online are for larger quantities than I need. If I halve the quantity do I need to reduce the cooking time?

For example, I have seen a recipe that calls for 3lbs chicken breast and needs cooking on low for 4 hours. I just weighed the 3 chicken breasts I would normally use for a meal and it’s about 1lb. Do I still cook it for 4 hours?

The liquid in the slow cooker transfers the heat from the edge (where the heaters are) to the meat. Slight temperature differences cause convection in the liquid so that once things have warmed up then everything is basically all at the same temperature. This therefore tells you that the quantity of meat does not change the cooking time although it will influence the time taken to get to cooking temperature. If you start by using hot liquid or preheat the food and then put it into the slow cooker then the cooking time will be unchanged. If you start from cold and bring everything to the boil in the cooker then your food will be cooked a little quicker as it will get up to temperature faster.

If you half the quantity of meat you also should reduce the liquid but be sure that the meat is totally covered.
