Are there any state or federal laws to protect people from being harrased at work if they are sick or elderly?
I am a counter manager for Estee Lauder and work in Bealls department store. I recently started treatment for colon cancer and have missed 3 days and have left work 2 times a few times early due to treatment or being ill. I bring doctors notes always. But one of my co-workers has started making my life miserable because I am sick. She constantly says its not fair I get to miss work and tells people she hates me. She tries to reprimand me for little things at work since I got sick even though she Is not in a position to. She is also wanting the company to fire me due to my illness. She also picks on two elderly women we work with because they can’t work evenings because they can’t drive after certain hours. She makes fun of them due to their age and makes them stay late and tries to write them up. are there any laws protectng the sick or elderly from this abuse in the work place. I am in fear of losing my job even though I am performing my job.
First, you need to file harassment charges against the woman. When her comments, jokes, gossip, opinions, start to interfere with your work, it is illegal, it’s harassment. Go immediately to your supervisor and to HR and report her. They will speak to you and then to her. If you know anyone else that has heard her comments, then let the supervisor know. They will transfer her to another department. She has no business being involved in anything pertaining to you or the other ladies. If i were a customer I would have been been mortified. The Disabled Persons Protective Commission-DPPC protects the elderly and the disabled. You could file a report with them and they will investigate. They can also help you file reports, and have the situation investigated. You have enough on your plate without having to deal with this woman. Good Luck.
PS Regarding the post above me, you will NOT lose your job. Your job is protected. They cannot fire you for filing harassment.
